Imagine a world where humans and dolphins engage in meaningful conversations beneath the waves. Thanks to groundbreaking advancements in artificial intelligence, that vision is now edging closer to reality.

Introducing DolphinGemma: Bridging the Communication Gap

Developed by Google in collaboration with Georgia Tech and the Wild Dolphin Project (WDP), DolphinGemma is an innovative AI model trained to decode and mimic dolphin vocalizations — including clicks, whistles, and burst pulses that form the basis of their social interactions.

Unlike traditional LLMs, DolphinGemma functions as an audio-in, audio-out model. It analyzes sequences of dolphin sounds to predict the next sound in a sequence — similar to how language models predict the next word in a sentence.

Real-Time Analysis with Pixel Smartphones

Optimized to run on Pixel smartphones, DolphinGemma enables real-time sound analysis during field research. This removes the need for bulky custom hardware, significantly reducing the cost and complexity of studying dolphin communication in the wild.

Two-Way Communication: The CHAT System

To enable interactive communication, researchers also developed the CHAT (Cetacean Hearing Augmentation Telemetry) system. This underwater computer links specific dolphin sounds to objects they enjoy, such as seagrass or scarves.

When a dolphin mimics a synthetic whistle, the system recognizes the request and notifies the human researcher via underwater headphones. This two-way feedback loop is expected to encourage dolphins to develop a shared vocabulary with humans.

A Leap Toward Interspecies Dialogue

DolphinGemma’s ability to detect patterns and structure in dolphin sounds opens new frontiers in understanding marine mammal behavior. It represents a monumental leap in the fields of marine biology, linguistics, and artificial intelligence.

Join the Journey

Google plans to release DolphinGemma as an open model, inviting global researchers to fine-tune it for other dolphin species. This collaborative effort could lead to the first-ever meaningful communication between humans and dolphins.

Dive into the future of interspecies communication. Together, we can decode the language of the ocean’s most intelligent residents.
